Modern Times Belmont Fermentorium | She & Him Eats

Welcome back to another She & Him Eats! In our recent trip to Portland we went to Modern Times Belmont Fermentorium. Located in one of Portland's raddest neighborhoods, this culinary wonderland brews and serves a lineup of fan favorites, rarities, and experimental beers. Ricky and I are huge fans of Modern Times Beer, so visiting their Portland location was a must! So join me today as we enjoy some delicious craft beer.
Finding the Modern Times Belmont Fermentorium building was easy, its located on the corner of Belmont and 7th, only a few blocks away from Cascade Brewing Barrel House, which I will be speaking about in my next She & Him Eats!

After walking inside I was immediately impressed, this place is really cool and roomy! Such a Portland bar, the bar itself is decorated with multicolored 3.5″ floppy disks (you can see it in the picture below), they had alternative music playing, and best of all a macho man randy savage piñata hanging from the ceiling. I love it! You can see his shiny feet hanging on the corner of the picture.
After appreciating all of the awesome art around the bar it was time for the best part, the beer!! Ricky started with Grim Tusk w/ Guatemalan Coffee, an Imperial Dessert Stout and I went with the Unbiased Opinion, a Nitro Blonde Stout. Both of these were recommend to us by the bar tender, we told him we love stouts and he said these two are their most popular stouts. I haven't see or tasted too many blonde stouts, so I was very intrigued to taste it. For this first round Grim Tusk took the cake, or should I say took the dessert but it was a close one. It's had a rich aroma and taste of dark cocoa, vanilla, coffee and a touch of fruit. Ricky and I both immediately loved it. As for the Unbiased Opinion, it was definitely delicious. It tasted even better than I expected, some of the notes I got were coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, cacao, almond, and a hints of caramel. It was incredibly smooth but maybe one too many flavors for my liking.

Pro Tip: Ricky and I always love to order two different kinds of beer, that way we can taste more and in case one of us doesn't like one we can always swap.

After our first beer I was in need of a bathroom break and while walking to the bathroom I ran into these adorable interactive art pieces. I'm not going to lie, I was playing with them for a while especially the top one with the cute little piñata.
For the second round, we decided to order a 5oz pour because we wanted to try one more beer still but we were starting to feel full. I decided to go with something light and refreshing, so I ordered Ice, a German Pilsner and Ricky went for the opposite and he ordered the Double Bourbon Aged Monster Park w/ Bourbon & Spanish Brandy, a Bourbon Aged Imperial Stout. I tend to stay away from bourbon aged stouts, don't get we wrong I've had some delicious bourbon aged stouts before but sometimes they're just too strong and they hit me right away. However, Ricky really enjoyed it he said it was definitely on the stronger side.
My thought today let's insert a very up close and personal picture of me.
Lastly for our last round at Modern Times Belmont Fermentorium. I ordered the Nitro Black House w/ Cocoa Coconut, an Oatmeal Coffee Stout. I'm a big fan of Modern Times Black House stouts, I've had them plenty of times. The only difference is this one is a Nitro with coffee, coconut, and cocoa. As for Ricky, he ordered the Probability Engine, another Imperial Dessert Stout. This was a new one for us. This beer was smooth and delicious, easy drinking and it masked the alcohol taste with hints of vanilla and coffee. Let's just say we both loved it!
After finishing our beers it was time to shop for some Modern Times merch! They had this cute section filled with tons of beer & merch. If I could have it my way I would of probably purchased one of everything because that's how much I love Modern Times beer. However, we decided to each purchase a shirt, we also picked up a bag of their Bourbon Aged Coffee Beans, and a four pack of their Grim Tusk beer, because like I mentioned earlier we really loved it!

And that's it! Ricky and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at the Modern Times Belmont Fermentorium. Modern Times creates some of the most amazing and delicious beer, and they have such a cool location. If you are ever in the neighborhood I highly recommend visiting Modern Times Belmont Fermentorium. Ricky and I will definitely be back to try more in the future. As always, thank you so much for reading!

What's your opinion?

  1. I'm not a big beer fan as you know, but this looks like such a cute little spot. I'm certain Rudy would enjoy it.
