The Cosmic Cavern by Kenny Scharf, Mickey: The True Original Exhibition | She & Him Adventures

Welcome to another She & Him Adventures! I swear as time passes these She & Him Adventures keep getting better and better. Today we are visiting The Cosmic Cavern by Kenny Scharf. Celebrating 90 years of Mickey Mouse’s influence on art and pop culture, Disney is proud to present artist Kenny Scharf’s latest Cosmic Cavern. This installation was a preview for the Mickey: The True Original Exhibition. It might be hard to believe but Mickey Mouse is turning 90! Mickey Mouse only turns 90 once and Disney is celebrating his 90th anniversary with a larger than life art exhibition. For a short time at the Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco, Disney fans could take a tiny peek at the magic that await for the upcoming exhibition in New York City. Ricky and I were lucky enough to visit Kenny Scharf 's The Cosmic Cavern, so without further ado, let's begin!

"A Classic Timepiece Meets A Timeless Classic." This was my first time visit the Minnesota Street Project, I was kind of confused for a second, I thought I was at the wrong location, until I noticed a few signs promoting the installation. The first room you enter was the lobby. I was surprised there wasn't a line to go in, maybe because we literally went on the last day of the exhibition and it was a Saturday.
Inside this room, the walls had a few very expressive Mickeys and a giant Mickey Mouse clock. These expressive Mickeys were my favorite, I even reenact a few of his moods.
One of the walls inside this room, had a few posters advertising the full exhibition in New York City.
Walking into the Cosmic Cavern we were greeted with techno music, which went very well with the installation. Kenny Scharf created this installation specifically inspired by Disney’s first licensed product, the Mickey Mouse watch. The installation takes guests through the black light world of the Cosmic Cavern. The Cosmic Cavern wasn’t that big inside, but there was definitely a lot to looks at, as you can see above!
Ricky and I had the whole installation to ourselves which was perfect because we were to elevate our experience by observing and processing the art alone, plus we were also able to grab some really great pictures.
We felt very lucky visiting Kenny Scharf's Cosmic Cavern because it was the first preview worldwide for the Mickey: The True Original Exhibition. Fans at home can experience a 360° tour of the installation at:
This clock was one of the first thing that caught my attention when I walk inside the Cosmic Cavern. I was immediately in love with it!!!
The installation had a few fans that were blowing air, they were perfect for taking pictures and boomerangs. We definitely took lots of pictures and boomerang, if you don't follow me on IG you should so you can see those boomerangs, click here.
Does anyone remember having one of these clocks? They were a big deal back in the days, I remember having one.
Another great piece inside the Cosmic Cavern was this piano. They even had a chair to sit on so you can take pictures. Kenny Scharf work is so surreal, I loved how he placed two Mickey hands on the piano.
Did anyone every stamped their bread with this Mickey Mouse bread stamp? As a kid, I loved seeing Mickey's face on my toasted bread. I'm not going to lie, I wish I still had this stamp.
If you haven't already noticed, this psychedelic art installation literally had a ton of hidden Mickey's through the entire installation. Who doesn't love a hidden Mickey? That's why they have them all over the parks.
This spectacular Cosmic Cavern had so many great photo opportunities. I wish Ricky and I were able to take a panoramic together, like the one above. Unfortunately, there wasn't a staff member inside the installation but we did manage to take a few pictures together, as you can see below.
If you didn't make it to this incredible and out of this world installation in San Francisco and are bummed about missing the Cosmic Cavern, don’t worry. Like I mentioned earlier The Cosmic Cavern is being transported to New York, where it will be viewable from November 2018 – February 2019 at Mickey: The True Original Exhibition.  I can’t think of a better way to celebrate 90 years of Mickey Mouse. Tickets are on sale now at I suggest following along on Instagram @MickeyTrueOriginal for more information.
I hope you enjoyed this post. Let me know below if you are into art, I would love to make more art related posts and even keep you updated on the newest installations/exhibitions to check out. Maybe even do a #FirstFriday post? Until next time and Happy birthday Mickey!
